Writing process
Any kind of creative process requires first inspiration, then flow of consciousness, followed by some type of editing process.
In regards to writing copy, I have always relied on the more visual approach by sketching outlines, and writing a few sentences on scratch paper. I then take the scrap paper, semi re-edit it and draft the copy into a digital document followed by a final editing process before I publish it for all eyes to see.
The approach that I take to writing copy is very similar to how I go about designing other visual instruments, such as logos, posters, websites or even video shoots.
Over the last five years or so voice recognition has gotten good enough that some copywriting projects I will use voice to text in the first step of the creative process. This is likely the direction that I will take most of my writing but honestly, it’s just more fun to start with a pen and paper.
